Chasing Light and Tides: A Morning with Su By Hand on Nyanyi Beach, Bali
There’s something about shooting by the sea that never quite feels like work.
This beachside editorial for Su By Hand, a Singapore-based sustainable fashion label, took place on the striking black sands of Pantai Nyani, Bali, a beautiful stretch of coastline that feels almost untouched.
We started just after sunrise, when the light was low and cast a beautiful pinkish, golden glow. It was the perfect setting to bring the collection to life—a capsule of thoughtfully crafted pieces made from natural materials like TENCEL-linen blends, organic cotton and TENCEL. Delicate details, like iridescent shell buttons on the label’s new SUZY top, shone beautifully in the morning light.
As a fashion photographer based in Singapore, planning overseas shoots like these are a dream. I love working with brands that are rooted in slow, intentional design. Su By Hand’s pieces moved effortlessly in the breeze given how lightweight the fabrics were, and I tried to lean into that sense of ease—capturing candid moments, natural textures, and the gentle flow of fabric against the wind.
One of my favourite moments was experimenting with the styling. We tied one of the label’s botanical hand-dyed scarves into a top and paired it with the brand’s GEORGIA corseted maxi trousers. It was a bit experimental, but turned out to be one of the most striking looks from the day!
As the tide rolled in (surprisingly quickly!), we found ourselves racing the waves to finish our final frames. But that push-and-pull with nature—the improvisation and unpredictability—felt completely aligned with Su By Hand’s ethos: connected to craft, inspired by the natural world, and designed to last.
